jhr funds project to bring domestic violence awareness to rural communities in Africa

In addition to training local journalists on human rights reporting, as a part of our programming overseas, jhr provides grants to local African NGO’s as a way of advancing local growth.

In 2009 jhr funded a campaign on the prevention of domestic violence in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society. The SLRCS decided to convey their message through drama presentations written to be performed live and on the radio in local communities. One of jhr’s overseas trainers worked with them as they developed their script about the reduction of domestic violence. They went to various communities, performed the drama and mediated discussions on how to prevent violence. The performances were a great success, drawing up to one hundred people per show, including village chiefs, their wives, farmers and children.
