In the 2025 holiday season, with the help of Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and scores of individual donors, Journalists for Human Rights raised funds to launch the JHR Conflict Reporting Fund, intended to resource the capacity-building and financial support of journalists reporting on human rights issues in high-conflict zones. For journalists covering Gaza, we partnered with the Palestinian Journalists Protection Center to provide grants to those journalists. The first of those stories are out now:
- Palestinian journalist Wafaa Abu-Hajjaj profiled a one-woman initiative called Your Safe Tent, which provides resources for Gazan women navigating life in displacement camps. The founder Ataf Al-Suwaisi is pouring hard-learned lessons from her own divorce to empower others and has expanded her work from the camps to central and southern Gaza. - Another Palestinian journalist Emad Abu Seif tells the story of Nibal al-Hassi, who lost both arms in an Israeli strike on her displaced family’s home in central Gaza while holding her two-year-old daughter. The piece follows Nibal’s fight to reclaim her independence and her role as a mother amid Gaza’s collapsed prosthetics and rehabilitation system, where thousands of amputees are still waiting for care. Stay tuned for more updates from journalists supported by the Fund.
