A focus on the meeting of faith and medicine led JHR-trained journalist Jamila Oktertchiri to the winner’s podium at the Ghana Journalists Association Media Awards. Jamila won the Best HIV/Aids Reporting Award for her Daily Guide Ghana story, Prayer Camp and HIV Treatment. In 2012, Jamila worked with JHR trainer Jonathan Mignault to profile two religious pastors and how an HIV diagnosis changed their attitudes toward the disease. Jamila has worked with three JHR trainers since 2011. “Working with JHR has been a blessing, ” explained Jamila. “My association with Atkilt Geleta, Paul Carlucci and Jonathan opened my eyes to the rights of people which I would have ignored.” Because of Jamila’s story, more Ghanaians know about their options for HIV testing and treatment, and the country’s attitudes toward HIV patients is slowly improving. Congratulations Jamila, from the whole JHR team!
