At Night for Rights 2019 we all won!
To everyone who came out and contributed to supporting our work to advance human rights everywhere: You made this happen. Thank you!
Our Honourary Co-Chair and Ambassador Masai Ujiri, president and GM of reigning NBA champions the Toronto Raptors, kicked things off in championship spirit when he said “I like to win.” He paused. “And winning is bringing others with you.”
Following Masai was the Hon. Karina Gould, Minister for International Development. As she put it: “Journalism has always been driven by a need to tell the truth and reveal injustices. By shining a light in the corners many would like to keep dark, you contribute to making change happen. Thank you for your contribution to human rights.”
“JHR was among the VERY FIRST to begin to challenge Canadian journalists to tell better Indigenous stories, and, more importantly, design, recruit and train First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth to start telling our own stories,” said Tanya Talaga, Columnist and Reporter Toronto Star. “We have a difficult history. But (…) JHR did not look away.”
