Since 2008, Data Journalism has become an integral part of the world’s largest media outlets. It has become a new industry in the media space, and has received the public’s appreciation for the fast, simple, appealing and rich information it provides.

It goes without saying that obtaining accurate data and information is more difficult than “stacking” a thousand words on top of one another and drafting them in the form of a report or an article, especially in countries that are reluctant to provide information. Data Journalism is “nascent” in Jordan. It started spreading in the country in 2013 through the efforts of individual initiatives and within limited institutions. So far, very few organizations consider Data Journalism part of their work and operations, or employ journalists who specialize in working on this kind of journalism.

In 2013, a Canadian organization called “Journalists for Human Rights” (JHR) launched a series of innovative training workshops for Jordanian journalists in cooperation with the Jordan Media Institute. The journalists received intensive training and mentorship on “Data Journalism”. The workshops also focused on introducing the new industry, the mechanism for revising information and numbers from texts and transforming them into visualizations, and learning from regional and international experiences.

I was lucky enough to be among the journalists who were trained by professional trainers from Jordan and Egypt. I was working as a business journalist at the time, which made it more exciting for me, since a large number of readers skip the economic pages, as they believe they are filled with scattered information and figures.

I began to apply the skills I had gained from JHR’s training with “Al Arab Al Youm” newspaper and the “Ammannet.net” website where I was working, and the feedback from the public and management was positive. Then, after a short period of time and after dealing with designers from outside the institution, I realized that I needed to get a good background in design.

Working with Infographics consists of two parts as the word suggests: “Info” for information, and “graphics” for design. This meant that, as a journalist, I either needed a designer who would understand exactly what I had in mind, or I needed to create them myself.

Despite my belief in team work and its importance, the second option was more appealing to me than searching for a designer who could read my thoughts. In a short period of time, I mastered 3 of the most important design programs out there (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), which designers rely on to design ads, books, and basically anything. I managed to do so by spending at least 4 hours every day, learning from free lectures and articles published on YouTube.

Now, two years after this experience, I got a job outside Jordan. I was chosen for this job because I am a “data journalist”. I also make a secondary income from freelance work in the design of Infographics, books, annual reports, and websites for media organizations or companies.

Still, the story did not end here. This field has led me to get deeper in the field of infographics design. With the spread of interactive Infographics, which enables the audience to interact with the story in a more attractive manner, a number of clients have requested stories of this kind. I’ve become capable of providing interactive stories or full pages of a report or investigation that contain text, images, video, sound, infographics, special effects, etc.

I certainly do not intend to change my career path from a journalist to a designer, but being a journalist with design skills has its advantage. I can be part of the data analysis and organization process, and my clients rely on me to fully create stories, and not stick to design.

Finally, in the era of “Digital Media”, you have to be proactive and up to date with all the new developments. It will not be acceptable now to be a journalist with traditional skills only. You should be skilled in photography, video and audio editing, design, and even programming; you can employ all these skills to showcase your story online.

*  أنس ضمرة
