June 3, 2022: Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is launching a call for applications as part of its Afghan Journalist-in-Residence Project

As part of the project, 10 Afghan journalists and media professionals will be offered paid placements with leading Canadian newsrooms such as CTV News, the Toronto Star, Canadian Press, Hamilton Spectator and Global News.

Since August 2021, JHR has helped relocate and support more than 300 Afghan journalists and media professionals and their families. The Afghan Journalist-in-Residence Project is a continuation of that work and is designed to support Afghan professionals’ involvement with and contributions to Canadian media.

Funding for this project was provided by the Meta Journalism Project.

As part of this program, successful applicants will be invited to:

  • Gain work experience and networking opportunities in Canadian media.
  • Receive mentorship from newsroom leaders.
  • Participate in human rights reporting training with JHR.

Application Information:

  • Placements are 12 months total.
  • Start dates are flexible and run from June to September 2022.
  • Placement opportunities may include a mix of in office, hybrid or remote. 
  • Applications will be evaluated by JHR staff and participating newsrooms.
  • JHR will work with newsrooms to place candidates according to skills and experience.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada.
